It seems like the Cobar Public School’s (CPS) soccer team has been watching World Cup soccer games and learnt a few skills which they have put to good use on the field.
CPS scored their third straight win in the Public Schools Sports Association Soccer competition last week.
The Cobar Public side has now advanced to Round 5 of the competition after they beat Narromine last week 5-2. (CPS had a bye in Round 1, beat Bourke 17-1 in Round 2, Nyngan 9-0 and Narromine last week in Round 4.)
Team coach, CPS teacher Cat Sharpe, said this team is the best performing soccer side in the school’s recent history and is amongst the best she’s ever coached.
She said having the services of Edwin Palma and Cooper Trudgett excelling in goalkeeping duties and Ashton ‘Messi’ Campbell and Max ‘Ronaldo’ Preisig as precision strikers who have scored numerous goals throughout this competition, helped to bolster the team.
And while Ashton (2) and Max (1) scored goals in last week’s game against Narromine, it was the goals from some of their other players, Edwin (1) and Callum Bennett (1), that helped them to their win.
“Callum Bennett, Riley Williams and Jason Thou ruled the midfield,” Cat said.
“Jason was easily player of the match on Thursday in Narromine. He is lightning.
“Lenny Hill showed off his skills as our only sub, taking on every position he proved himself invaluable to the team.
“Preston ‘One Touch’ Olsen delivered excellently as our sweeper, with Kye Robinson and Jack Preisig adding to our impenetrable defence.
“Kade Taylor also helped out up front with a few assists.”
Cat said injured players, Cooper Suridge and Billy Williams, missed last week’s game and she looks forward to playing with a full team in the next round where they will play a Dubbo school team. (Their opposition is yet to be determined.)
