Patricia proves you’re never too old to follow a dream

At the age of 85 most people are slowing down but not local Patricia Porter who’s
recently set up a vintage clothing business at her home.

One local octogenarian has proved that age is no barrier when it comes to setting up and running your own business.

While most other people her age have long retired, 85 year old Patricia Porter has recently sold one business and opened another.

“I’ve had my own business for years [managing a number of real estate properties] and when I sold the cottages, I was looking for something to do with my time,” Patricia told The Cobar Weekly.

“My mother had a ladies wear shop and I used to go there after school sometimes and I learnt a lot from watching and listening to her.

“I think that’s maybe what gave me the idea to open a vintage clothing business.

“It was something that I thought of doing quite a few years ago when I realized people wanted vintage things and I started collecting them.

“And I thought now is the time to do this  and I’ll tell you what, I’ve never been so busy!

“But this is what I wanted,” she said.

“It’s something to do and something that I’m interested in.

“And I’m enjoying it.

“I’ve only been open a couple of weeks but I have had a bit of interest and a few people in to have a look and received some good feedback from people so far.”

In addition to collecting men’s and ladies’ vintage clothing from the 1950s (many of which are Australian made), Patricia’s also been collecting furniture, household items, books, newspapers, stamps and toys, some of which date back to the 1940s.

“I’m not really looking to buy more items, I have plenty of stuff of my own to sell.

“There’s even more stuff in storage but I can’t put out any more than I’ve already got,” she said.
