King Roosters book themselves a grand final berth

King Roosters (A Grade) and Rusty Snails (B Grade) have booked themselves grand final appearances after they won their Open Mixed Touch qualifying semi final games last Thursday.

King Roosters outlasted Concrete Cowboys in their tit-for-tat A Grade semi with King Roosters running away late in the game to finish with a 9-6 win.

Toby Greenwood and Zane Taylor scored a try each in the first half with Bridgette Negfeldt, Marty Turton, Phoebe Pursehouse and Sophie Clark touching down for a try each in the second half.

In reply, Neve Carter (2) and Hannah Carrol scored Concrete Cowboys’ tries.

Concrete Cowboys will get another shot at a grand final spot when they come up against the Red Hot Chilli Steppers in tomorrow night’s final.

The 4th placed Chilli Steppers won their A Grade elimination semi final against third placed Phat Athletes 12-7.

Despite a second half comeback with Phat Athletes outpointing Chilli Steppers 5-4, the
2-8 deficit between the two teams at half time was “a bridge too far” for the Phat Athletes and their loss sees the veterans now bow out of the competition.

Brennah Aumua and Tom Plater (with two tries each) led the scoring for the Chilli Steppers with Cassidy Chapman, Joseph O’Connor, Kai Taylor, Loma Atuau and Veni Taumalolo also on their scorer’s list.

Todd Fugar scored a double for Phat Athletes in their swan song game of the season with Georgia Boland, Tim Hillam and Zoë Egan their other try scorers.

In the B Grade competition, Rusty Snails took the lead from the outset in their qualifying semi final game against CATS.

By halftime, Rusty Snails were up 3-0 thanks to tries by Ashton Dietrich, Jesse Murphy and Kody Martin.

A second half try each by Ben Small and Ethan McLeod helped to seal Rusty Snails’ win.

Leisa Mexted was the only CATS player able to penetrate the Rusty Snails’ defence all game and her second half try helped to narrow the final margin to 5-2.

After last week’s loss, CATS have had a week to regather and regroup and will be keen to make amends when they take on The Blossoms in tomorrow night’s B Grade final.

The Blossoms easily won their elimination semi final game last week 15-3 over Urban Strength.

Jaxon Burke ran in four tries for The Blossoms with Sosie Barton and Tadgh Waugh scoring three times each and Oisin McMullen touched down for two tries.

Jayden Cryer (2) and Jack Fazulla were responsible for Urban Strength’s three tries.

Tomorrow night’s final matches should both be good, close games.

The last time the Concrete Cowboys and the Chilli Steppers met was in Round 1 and the game finished in a 7-all draw.

It’s the same timeline for The Blossoms and the CATS since they came up against each other and in that game CATS only just got the better of Blossoms 9-7.
