Cobar netballers had great results at the Netball NSW 2017 State Championships over the long weekend at Baulkham Hills in Sydney.

The Cobar Opens team competed in Opens Division 2 finishing with eight wins for the tournament while three Cobar juniors, who joined the Glen Innes team, finished as winners of their Under 17s Division 3 pool.

It’s only the second year that a Cobar team has contested the State Championships and this year’s team improved on last year’s performance.

The Opens had the perfect start to the competition this year with a thrilling 15-14 win first up over Singleton which they followed up with another 16-14 win over Armidale.

After losses to strong Quirindi and Hawkesbury teams, the Cobar side bounced back to claim a tough 21-20 win over Young.

The team added another two good wins to their tally on Day 2 of the competition with a comprehensive 20-13 drubbing of Dubbo backed up with a 23-14 victory over Mt Druitt.

The Cobar girls were unlucky to narrowly lose to Nelson Bay 14-16.

The Cobar Opens finished their 2017 campaign strongly with a first up win on Day 3, 22-13 against Tamworth. After a close loss, 14-18 to Macleay, the Opens finished the tournament with back to back wins over Woolondilly 15-11 and Eurobadalla, 21-15.

Coach Amie Hill said she was very happy with the results, the positive attitude of her players and the way they represented Cobar.

“Our good wins over big regional towns shows the quality of netball in Cobar is strong,” Hill said.

“I’m also very proud of our juniors who slotted into the Glen Innes team demonstrating the skills they have learnt through Cobar netball to contribute to their team’s win.”
