With 112 businesses in Cobar currently registered for JobKeeper, Labor Senator Tim Ayers is concerned local jobs will be at risk if the Government’s scheme is withdrawn at the end of September.
Senator Ayers said the JobKeeper scheme is currently supporting more than 20,000 workers in the Parkes electorate, 426 of which are in Cobar and receive a total of $639,000 per fortnight.
“This data shows that cutting Jobkeeper payments too early could have devastating consequences for workers, businesses and communities in Western New South Wales,” Senator Ayers said.
Regional Development Australia (RDA) Orana Director Megan Dixon reports a recent business survey shows the COVID-19 pandemic has challenged and changed our region with business owners reporting job losses, health concerns, worries about how businesses can cope and uncertainty about the future.
“As we plan our recovery, the choices we make in the coming weeks and months can help us build an economy and region that works for everyone,” Ms Dixon said.
