Yabbies hit the water for the first time this season

Eight swimmers (along with one timekeeper) faced the starter for the Cobar Yabbies first
competition swim of the season on Tuesday night at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool.

The Yabbies hit the water on Tuesday
night for their first swim of the Cobar Senior
Men’s Swimming Club 2022/2023 season
with swimmers reporting the water was
“fresh”.
Many of the Yabbies are however wellseasoned
to the cool starts of the season, including
Bob Clark, who’s been swimming with
the Yabbies since the club first kicked off 51
years ago.
It was six-time club champion, Bill Fugar
who threw down the gauntlet in the first event
of the season, winning the 30 metres handicapped
freestyle event with a spot on time.
Murray Harland was second with 0.19 seconds
off his nominated time and Paul Swainston
finished in third place with 0.44 seconds
off his time.
Harland was well ahead of the field in the
50m event winning with a time of 0.12 seconds
off his nominated time.
Lucas Hardy claimed second spot with a
swim of 0.37 seconds off his nominated time
and Fugar finished in third place with 0.62
seconds off his time.
Harland was once again out in front in the
100m swim and won with the best time of 0.68
seconds off his nominated time.
Hardy ran second to Harland again, finishing
within 1.34 seconds of his time.
Jason Toomey (dressed for the weather in a
full wetsuit) turned in his best time of the night
to place third with 1.69 seconds off his nominated
time.
The Cobar Yabbies will be celebrating their
50th/51st anniversary later this month with a
reunion dinner, swimming carnival and other
events planned over the weekend of October
28-30.
Reunion organiser Bob Clark said the numbers
attending this year’s reunion celebrations
are slightly down on those that had planned to
attend the 50th reunion last year (which had to
be postponed to this year, due to COVID restrictions).
Bob said there are still a lot of former Yabbies
and their families planning on attending
this year along with swimmers from 18 other
clubs the Cobar swimmers have competed
against in the past 51 years.
