Familiar faces return to the rugby field

The large crowd at the Howie’s Day at Ailsa Fitzsimmons Memorial Oval on Saturday night were treated to two games of rugby and one game of mixed league tag.

The Old Boys match proved very entertainment and resulted in a 5-all draw with the Camels team led by Rusty Mitchell.

The game saw the return of Dave Edwards, Rob ‘Hippy’ Hurst and Stu Harland.

Setting the tone for the match, the game started with stacks-on to local fire captain Brad Lennon.

Bill Behsman played fullback in an unprecedented way and announced Dale McLeod and Jamie Gapps will be joining him next year.

The second rugby match of the night saw the Camels “Young Boys” side led by local firie Jamie Peters, who had a promising start working on combinations against a stacked Firies side including country cockatoo Benn Wright.

The Camels showed excellent endurance and the forwards played a well structured game.

All signs point to significant improvement on last year.

Despite the great effort the Firies team managed to take the win.

Both teams showed great camaraderie after the game, with Firies team members Rod Hill and John McGirr promising to return next year to defend the Howie Cup.
