Cobar bowlers win first pennants round

The Golfie bowlers beat their Nyngan opposition in the first round of the 2023 pennant bowls competition for our region played in Cobar on Sunday.

Rink 3’s game was neck-and-neck with the Cobar team of Dean ‘Bogger’ McLeod, Peter ‘China’ Brien, Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond and Don Roberts’ two point win on the very last end ensuring the game finished as a draw.

John ‘Shark’ Daly, Shane Carter, Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey and Gerard Livingston’s game with their Nyngan opponents was a cliff hanger.

With only two ends remaining, Cobar needed six points to win and you could have cut the tension in the air with a knife! The spectators went wild as Cobar scored the points they needed and they claimed a +1 win.

It doesn’t get any more exciting than that!

Over on rink 4, Barry Bargwanna, Doug Hudson, Michael Sargent and Greg Read held on tight to the mat from the get-go and held out to finish with a four point win on the 15th end.

Cobar won the day by +9. The Cobar sides will travel to Bourke this Sunday to play Bourke in the next round.

Sunday’s social bowls was light on numbers as most seasoned bowlers were otherwise occupied playing pennants games against Nyngan.

From the social field, Alec Fraser and Helen Boddy blitzed their opponents Karen Daly and Greg Clark.

Boddy led the charge with outstanding precision and Fraser’s masterfully executed deliveries further enhanced their stranglehold on the green winning the day by a whopping 17 points.

Jay Egan and Paul Kershaw also had a great day on the green ending up with +14 victory over John Claus and Justin Patzwald.

While Egan certainly earned bragging rights for the most “chalkies” (bowls are marked with chalk when they touch the jack) his wrong bias also earned him the George The Giraffe Award!

Friday’s Twilight Bowls Spider event winner was Steve Manns.

The outright winners of the evening were Damon Pike and Karen Daly who finished with +24. They soundly accounted for their opposition in Tony Polack and Jim Nicholls.

In the game on rink 11, Alan Knight and Tom McKeown kicked off with a five point win against Don Roberts and Peta Zazoniuk on the first end and they retained the upper hand in the game right to the end.

Visitor from Wyong, Mike Bryan teamed up with John ‘Shark’ Daly to win their match over Greg Clark and Steve Manns by a margin of +3.

The Jackpot went off again with the magic number of five coming up for Knight and McKeown.—The Second
