Camels came off second best to Rams

The Cobar Camels took on a very strong Walgett Rams outfit for Round 4 of the Western Plains Rugby competition at Ailsa Fitzsimmons Memorial Oval on Saturday afternoon and came off second best.

The Camels were hit just before kick-off with the news of the withdrawal of several key players, and a last minute reshuffle was needed before the whistle blew.

The game was a very tough, physical affair, with Walgett resorting to kicking a penalty goal to get points on the board first.

They repeated this shortly after to have a six point lead after the first 20 minutes.

The Camels’ defence was holding strong, however Walgett made a hard push down the wing which resulted in a long distance try in the corner.

The Rams took advantage of a reduced Camels team after two Cobar players were yellow carded and sent from the field, to score another easy try to take a 22-0 lead going into half time.

The Camels then suffered a few injuries to key players, however thankfully Walgett were not able to capitalize on their injury woes and only managed to cross the Camels’ line once more to post a final score of 27-0, which was a respectable result for Cobar club given their earlier player issues.

Cobar’s best on field were Tony Jacklin (best and fairest three points), Mason Garland (2) and Sione Fukuhara (1).

This week the Camels have an away game to Brewarrina, and Coach Lenny Baker has asked for all or any available players to be at training on Thursday to make sure they have the numbers to travel.—contributed
