Two local artists share Thelma’s Best Painting Award

competition on Friday night at the railway station.

Cobar Arts Council held their annual  Art, Craft & Photography exhibition and competition at the railway station over the weekend.

The official opening on Friday night was well attended with the guests entertained by musician Gavin O’Donnell as well as a surprise visit by the members of the string quartet from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

Special guests also included Hyacinth and Richard Bucket of TV fame (aka Betsy and Ray Chandler).

Multi-talented artist Susan Singleton won the Joan Singleton Perpetual Award for overall point score and also shared the Thellie Wade Perpetual Award for Best Painting with Kylie Harvey.

Susan also collected first place in the Drawing class (with Kylie Harvey the runner-up) and an equal first place (with Renee Gapps Mackay) in the Portrait—People/Animal section.

The Painting section winner was Rita Fisher with Aimee Freeman the runner-up and Elizabeth Whiteman in third place.

Stephanie Engelbrecht won the Abstract/Contemporary Painting award with Susan Singleton the runner-up.

The Watercolour section was won by Kylie Harvey.

Jan Johnson collected first place in the Pottery section.

Natalia Paperniak and Simonne Mackay were both runners-up.

Chandice Bowles placed both first and second in the Photography section while Rahni Crofts was third and Annabella Harvey was Highly Commended.

In the Handicraft—Fabric, Yarn & Stitchery class, Jane Siermans won first place with Paris Capell collecting second prize.

Kylie Harvey was third and another work of Jane’s was also Highly Commended in this section.

In the Handicraft (any other medium) section Jan Johnson was awarded both first and second places. Elizabeth Whiteman was third and Chandice Bowles was Highly Commended

Rita Fisher earned first place in the Any Cultural Artform section with Natalia Papierniak the runner-up.

In the Woodwork section, Mathew Wang was the most successful exhibitor with Simonne Mackay the runner-up.

In the High School Years 7-9 section, the first and third places winner was Johanna McClure with Montana Edwards in second place. Another work of Johanna’s and Isobel Willard were Highly Commended.

Louisa Swanepoel earned first, second and third places in the Primary School Years K-2 section while Juan Engelbrecht was Highly Commended.

Leala Engelbrecht was first and equal second (with Janie Swanepoel) in the Primary Scholl Years 3-6 category. Janie Swanepoel and Ashton Adams were Highly Commended.

The Community Group award was won by COOSH.

This year’s People’s Choice Award was won by Jan Johnson’s ‘The Derelict Dray—Broken Hill’ in the Handicraft section while high school student Montana Edwards’ painting entitled ‘Follow Your Inner Compass’ won the Packers Award.
