The Cobar Roosters First Grade team staked a late claim for a tilt at the semi finals of the Castlereagh Rugby League competition with a comprehensive 48-16 win over Baradine on Saturday.
The Cobar team edged itself back into fourth position on what is a very congested competition ladder, with no less than four clubs still in contention for the fourth rung on the ladder.
The Gulgong Terriers are the outright leaders of the competition with Gilgandra not far behind in second place, and Dunedoo sitting in third spot.
The Roosters host the Dunedoo Swans for Round 17 this Saturday and a Cobar win will further improve their semi final hopes.
Tim Hillam, Matt McDougall and David Watson led the scoring for the Roosters in Saturday’s Round 16 win over Baradine.
The trio all crossed twice for the Roosters in the match played at Baradine as they romped to a comprehensive 32 points win.
Chris Deighton and Ben Simon also scored tries for the Roosters with Rob Childs returning from injury in sensational form kicking eight goals in the match to add an extra 16 points to Cobar’s big tally.
Michael Manns, Tyson Brilley and Ash Davies stepped up from Under 18s and played a big part in Cobar’s win with Brilley having a great run through eight defenders in a 70 metre dash up field to set up one of Cobar’s tries.
Jed Noonan, Deighton and Simon linked well to set up a strong platform for their backs who were allowed to run rampant through the Baradine defence to score on numerous occasions. McDougall and Jesse Hamilton both had great defensive and attacking games to share in their side’s Best and Fairest points.
