Roosters celebrate Cobar’s rugby league history

Cobar junior and senior rugby league club members were on hand for the unearthing of a time capsule at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on Saturday as part of a day of celebrating the history of league in Cobar.

The Cobar Roosters senior and junior rugby league football clubs celebrated their sport in a big way on Saturday.

Five junior and two senior games, along with a mini exhibition match, were played at Tom Knight Memorial Oval with the First Grade side playing in Glory Days jerseys (remembering players from 1949 to 1960) while the League Tag team wore Ladies of League jerseys to acknowledge the contributions local women had made to the club.

The Roosters also unearthed a time capsule that had been buried for 29 years which contained various photos, newspapers, and letters plus an unopened bottle of Tooheys New beer.

A dedication was made to three past players with large plaques unveiled that record the stellar careers and club contributions of Tom Knight, Bossie Mitchell and Ted Brown.

The celebrations continued into the night with a sports evening, auctions of players’ jerseys and football memorabilia.
