Roosterettes bounce back to win 18-12

Jenna Fullagar, at centre with the ball, had a number of elusive runs for the Roosterettes in their Barwon Darling Cup League Tag win against Walgett on Saturday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval. On this occasion she evaded a number of Walgett defenders but was caught before making it to her try line.

The Cobar Roosterettes took an early 8-0 lead in Saturday’s Barwon Darling League Tag game against the Walgett visitors at Tom Knight Memorial Oval however two runaway converted tries gave the visitors a 12-8 advantage at the half time break.

It was early in the match when Laura Ah-See crossed out wide for the home side to put first points on the board for the Roosterettes.

Lesley Tiffen crossed not long after to give the Roosterettes an 8-0 lead.

Both of team captain Zoë Harland’s sideline attempts at conversions were waved away.

The Roosterettes team then appeared to lose concentration and a number of players missed important tags which saw Walgett go ahead to lead 12-8 at the break.

Fortunately the Roosterettes made a return to their previous good form in the second half and took control once again in the match.

Inspiring elusive runs by Nikki Davey, Jenna Fullagar and Brianna Watson gave the Roosterettes good field position while the dogged tagging efforts of Bianka Jacobson, Kaitlyn Clark and Tyler Chiswick kept the Walgett team deep in their half.

Soon after the restart, a grubber kick by Harland close to their line was pounced on by Naomi Whitehurst for a try which Harland then converted. Harland was also involved in the Roosterettes’ next try. After catching a Walgett kick, she evaded her opposition for 40 metres before passing off to Clark who crossed to score. Harland duly converted to give the Roosterettes an 18-12 win.

Best and fairest points went to Davey, Fullagar and Harland with Davey voted Players’ Player.
