Upgrade work on the Drummond Park playground area has well and truly begun with a new permanent shade structure being erected over the last couple of weeks.

The new steel structure is significantly higher and will be more durable than the previous shade cloth structure.

New concrete paths are expected to be installed in the coming weeks and synthetic turf has been ordered to be installed underneath the new shade.

Cobar Shire Council special projects officer Angela Shepherd said the hard roofed structure is designed to keep birds from nesting under it.

Play equipment suitable for 0-5 year olds and keeping with the mining theme of town is to be installed.

The equipment will go under the steel structure to keep it all shaded.

Ms Shepherd said there will be a pathway for small bikes around the play equipment area so kids can ride around and it will make supervision easier for parents.

The shade structure was constructed by local contractors.
