The Cobar basketball community had a rare opportunity come up last week when an ex-Oceanic basketball referee, Rex Baldwin, called in at the Youthie during his camping trip.

Youthie staff member Louise McKervey said Rex was keen to know Cobar’s basketball status.

“When we told him that it was growing quite rapidly for juniors and there was a need for more adult knowledge and assistance, he offered to give us all an afternoon of his time,” Louise said.

They organised a session on Sunday.

“A mix of adults, teens and kids came along and he ran us through drills teaching us how referees see the court and game differently to players, how to keep the stadium controlled and safe for all, and many other lessons he has learnt in his very interesting life.”

Louise said they will be putting what they learnt from Rex into practice and will be holding basketball clinics during the school holidays.
