Nine sporting projects across Barwon, including one in Cobar, will receive a share of nearly $300,000 in grants.

The grants are a result of a successful bid by local MP Roy Butler to secure discretionary funding from the NSW Government and Minister for Sport, Steve Kamper.

The Minister for Sport can award grants that align with the Office of Sport’s Strategic Plan.

This is known as discretionary funding.

Cobar Shire Council will receive $12,900 to upgrade the sound system at Ward Oval.

Other grant recipients included: South Broken Hill Football Club ($64,482 for an air conditioning upgrade), West Broken Hill Football Club ($24,978 public address upgrade), Broken Hill Pistol Club ($29,900 to upgrade range surface), Warren Netball Club ($45,000 for court lighting), Warren Junior Soccer Association ($30,00 for sun smart upgrades), Walgett PCYC ($30,000 for a Nations of Origin 2025 and afternoon program), Narrabri Soccer Club ($22,000 for building and earthworks and upgrade of electrical system) and Tullibigeal Lake Cargelligo United Rugby ($36,000 for a kitchen and canteen update).

“Sport is so important to Barwon communities, not only for the health benefits it brings, but also for social cohesion,” Mr Butler said.

“Many of our sporting clubs are central to community life, and investing in this infrastructure can benefit these communities beyond just weekend sport.

“Sport out west is more than just recreation, for us it’s vital to our social fabric, this funding means we can continue to invest and improve in Barwon’s overall quality of life,” he said.
