Locals put on a Christmas light show

There were plenty of colourful and imaginative Christmas displays for this year’s Cobar Weekly Christmas Cheer competition
sponsored by Aurelia Metals/Peak Gold Mines and Cobar Powerhouse. The judges gave $100 Cobar Quids encouragement awards to the Tranter’s music activated display in Morrison Street and the Curtis family’s “Merry Christmas Ya Filthy Animal” entry in Jones Drive. Leanne and Wayne Mackay’s “lights everywhere” display in Echidna Avenue took out first prize of $500 Cobar Quids just two points ahead of the Lawrence’s “Christmas characters” lay out in Louth Road. The Lawrences collected $350 for second prize. Third prize of $200 went to Talitha Raines’ “everything gold Christmas inside and out” display in Becker Street. The winners are pictured above collecting their Cobar Quids from Laura Newton, representing major sponsor Aurelia Metals/Peak Gold Mines, on Monday.
The Mackay’s Christmas Light display in Echidna Avenue just keeps getting bigger and better each year. It was once again a huge hit with our Christmas Cheer competition
judges, along with second place, the Lawrence’s display in Louth Road. (Only two points separated them.) Make sure you put all our winners (which were also in Becker Street, Jones Drive and Morrison Street) on your Christmas lights drive by list.
The Lawrence’s light display on Louth Road

Leanne and Wayne Mackay took out the first place prize of $500 Cobar Quids in The Cobar Weekly’s 2023 Christmas Cheer competition but the couple said they didn’t enter for the money.

Leanne actually didn’t even know they were entered in this year’s competition as it was Wayne who nominated them.

“We do it for the kids,” Leanne said.

And while their own grandchildren get a thrill out of the huge display at their Echidna Avenue home, so too do many other children.

“It’s fantastic to sit out the front on Christmas Eve and see the kids go past and hear them go ‘Oh and Ah’ when they see the lights,” Leanne said.
