House fire deemed suspicious

When Fire & Rescue NSW Cobar Station 256 crews arrived at a house fire in Becker Street last Tuesday at approximately 1pm they found the unoccupied home well alight. Fire captain Tony Walkinshaw reports that it took crews approximately 1.5 hours to bring the fire under control. “The building was totally destroyed by the fire,” Captain Walkinshaw said. “The cause and origin of the fire is currently under investigation, however the cause is currently deemed suspicious.” Captain Walkinshaw also said that due to the unexpected Telstra outage, some firefighters were delayed in responding to the fire as they could not be contacted. Cobar Police Sergeant Chris Power said following police enquiries, they have determined that the fire was deliberately lit by a child. “The child will be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act,” Sergeant Power said.
