First dip of the season for the Yabbies was unusually warm one

The Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club members normally need to psych
themselves up a bit for their first swim of the season (which is traditionally a bit cool) but that wasn’t the case this year with the water temperature at the Cobar Memorial
Swimming Pool a pleasant 23 degrees for their first swim on Tuesday night.

The Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club new season has gotten off to a great start with warmer than average weather making for very pleasant swimming conditions.

The Yabbies had their first dip of the new 2023/2024 season (which is the club’s 52nd season) at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool on Tuesday night with the water temperature a very nice 23 degrees.

The club’s publicity officer and handicapper Paul Swainston reports the warmer water temperature (and also warmer air temperature) reflected in swimmers’ times with all swimming slower than their nominated times.

(In previous years, when the weather is cool, they tend to swim faster so they can get out of the water quicker.)

Matt Harland claimed the first win of the season when he finished out in front in the 30 metres handicapped freestyle swim.

Harland was closest to his nominated time (only 0.13 seconds off) with Swainston second (0.47) and Bill Fugar was third with 0.72 seconds off his time.

Kyle Roberts finished in first place in the 50m swim after touching the wall within 0.21 seconds of his nominated time.

Stephen ‘Pud’ Clark was second on 0.46 and Dave Mexted was next best with a time of 1.31 seconds off his nominated time.

Roberts backed up to win the 100m swim.

He had the best time from the field of eight with 4.16 seconds off his time and was just ahead of Mexted (4.32). Greg Dimond claimed third spot with 5.72 seconds off his nominated time.
