Cobar’s annual Festival of the Miners Ghost (FOMG) is still more than two months away, however organisers have already made the decision to cancel this year’s event.
Council’s tourism manager Demi Smith said the decision was made last week as the
future looks uncertain due to COVID-19 restrictions.
“It was important that we be proactive with this decision and call it now rather than later even though the festival weekend isn’t until the end of October,” Demi told The Cobar Weekly.
“I believe this decision is the best and most responsible decision as it is very uncertain what we still will be facing come October with the current pandemic and the restrictions regarding mass crowd gatherings.”
Demi said it was disappointing.
“Originally at the beginning of the year this would have been the biggest weekend on the calendar for Cobar with the FOMG and Back to Cobar reunion weekend celebrating 150 Years of Cobar.
“However the most important thing right now is that we abide by the restrictions, be responsible with our actions and keep our community and our surrounding communities safe and, fingers crossed, COVID-19 free.”
