Double celebration for Aurelia Metals this week

Mayor Jarrod Marsden and State Member for Barwon Roy Butler were special guests of Aurelia General Manager Cobar Region, Angus Wyllie for Aurelia’s double celebration morning tea at the Great Cobar Museum yesterday

Peak Gold Mines staff had a double celebration yesterday to mark the 21st anniversary of the New Cobar Decline and the commencement of the Aurelia Metals’ operations at Great Cobar.

The joint occasion was marked with a
morning tea at the Great Cobar Museum, which was the former Great Cobar Administration Building.

Raising a cuppa to Cobar’s proud history and Aurelia’s bright future, guests included State Member for Barwon, Roy Butler, Cobar Shire Council mayor, Jarrod Marsden, Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko, members of the Community Consultative Committee and the Company’s senior leaders.

“We’re going to kick off Great Cobar from today, starting from the New Cobar operation and heading back across to basically where we’re standing and below where we are today,” Mr Wyllie said.

“We’re really looking forward to this journey and I think it’s an exciting time.”

Aurelia’s Great Cobar project received approval in April 2025 and is estimated to have an initial eight year mine life with first ore projected for 2028.

Mr Wyllie said restarting Great Cobar means the creation of 30 fulltime roles which will bring a further contribution to the town of Cobar, the wider Barwon electorate and the state of NSW.

He said the project will deliver 77,000 tonnes of copper and 84,000 ounces of gold across its life.

“The production target is 3.6 million tonnes, with 2.3 per cent copper and 99 grams per tonne of gold.

“The first stoping will commence in FY2028, it then ramps up to 500,000 tonnes per annum, by 2030,” he said.

“Great Cobar, along with our Federation Mine, really underpins Peak’s future, and our expansion to 1.2 million tonnes.

“We’ve got a very long future ahead of us across our tenement package and working with the Cobar community.”

Mr Wyllie said yesterday’s celebration, along with multiple on-site barbecues across site for their workforce, signified the importance the Company places on the history of the mine and its continued links to the family of its workforce.
