Cobar golfers clinch thrilling Far West Rose Bowl win

Cobar has once again clinched the Far West Rose Bowl in a thrilling win on Sunday which attracted over 70 golfers from all over NSW with perfect weather all weekend. 

The best team nominated by Cobar consisted of players Karen Manns, Barb Barklimore and Angela Fryer.

Manns was the star of the team also taking out the C Grade Scratch, the W & B Bartlett best local net and the Vi McLaughlin Memorial best local C Grade net titles on the day.

She was also in the teams competition winners with Jenny Stephenson and Penny Russ-Smith and was the recipient of the Pam Davis Salver for the best overall net score of 64.

The A Grade winners on the day were Jenny Stephenson, Broken Hill (18 hole Scratch), Mandy Martin, Nyngan (18 hole Scratch runner-up), Penny Russ-Smith, Albert (18 hole net), Rosemary Newton, Walgett (18 hole net runner-up), A Medcalf, Parkes (9 hole Scratch), Sally Bannister (9 hole Scratch runner-up), Linda McCutcheon, Trangie (9 hole net) and R Harris, Nyngan (9 hole net runner-up).

Janet Place won the A Grade nearest the pin prize and Chrissy Gilligan had the longest drive.

In B Grade Debbie Matheson from Nyngan won the 18 hole Scratch and A Mewburn from Hillston was the runner-up.

Bridget Gillespie (Trangie) won the 18 hole net, Jenny Murray (Coonamble) was the 18 hole net runner-up, B Laws (Warren) 9 hole Scratch, J Horwood (Gilgandra) 9 hole Scratch runner-up, Pam Richardson (Hillston) 9 hole net, and Val Soulsby (Warren) was the 9 hole net runner-up. B Grade’s nearest the pin prize went to Debbie Matheson and the longest drive prize to Jenny Murray.

Cobar shone in C Grade with a number of prizes.

Gloria Hay was the 18 hole Scratch runner-up, Susan Goonrey the 18 hole net winner, J Rodway (Gilgandra) 18 hole net runner-up, D Reko (Hillston) 9 hole Scratch winner, Karen Irvine (Hillston) 9 hole Scratch runner up, Bessie Kitson 9 hole net winner and Carol Abbott was the 9 hole net runner-up.

Reko took out the nearest the pin prize in C Grade and Rodway had the longest drive.

The Veterans best 18 hole net prize went to Penny Russ-Smith and Sally Bannister had the best net score for a grandmother over 18 holes.

Rosemary Newton and Russ-Smith picked up the pairs prize for the best combined last 9 hole net score.

On Saturday 33 teams took to the course in the NewGold Peak Gold Mine Canadian event.

Pam Sikora and Jenny Stephenson won the day with a Scratch score of 82 followed by Janet Place and Geraldine Francisco with 90 off the stick. Barb Deans and Penny Russ-Smith were the net winners and S Bone and J Horwood the net runners-up.

Nearest the pins prizes were won by Narelle Kriz and L Lister, Debbie Matheson and Mandy Martin, L Rawlinson and B Laws, Pam Sikora and Jenny Stepenson and Judy McCabe and C Flynn.

A prelude to the weekend for Karen Manns was Wednesday’s stroke win with 72 net.

Jenny Murray was next with 76 net followed by a countback between sisters Geraldine Francisco and Susan Goonrey after both ladies carded 78 net. Goonrey was the best with the short stick having 25 putts.

Today is a Par game and Saturday is this month’s Trophy day which will be a graded stroke event. The Empire Hotel three person Ambrose will be played on Sunday so best get teams organised for this day.—T’d Off
