Cobar Roosters male and female players travelled to Yanco to compete as the Cobar Cohoe Roosters in the Yanco 9’s Rugby League tournament on Saturday with the Cobar girls team winning the women’s division.
Despite challenging weather conditions, both teams demonstrated outstanding teamwork and resilience, pushing through the slippery conditions with determination.
The Cobar women’s team played two round games, with the match against Ivanhoe cut short due to an injury of an Ivanhoe player.
The team displayed remarkable improvement throughout the day and went on to defeat Hay 12-8 in a close contest.
The win secured them a place in the grand final, which was a “Battle of the Roosters” against a neighboring team, the Ivanhoe Roosters.
Cobar was first to score, with Taylah Good putting points on the board.
The momentum continued as Bridgette Negfeldt added another try to extend their lead.
Ivanhoe responded, bringing the score to 8-4 in favour of Cobar with limited time remaining.
Exceptional defensive efforts from Myah Sullivan, Jezebel Hitchins and Sophie Clark held off the opposition.
Finally, Good sealed the victory with the last try of the match, securing a 12-4 win for Cobar.
Neve Carter’s exceptional tackling skills earned her the Player of the Tournament award—an honor determined by the luck of the coin flip but, undoubtedly, well deserved!
The Cobar men’s side posted a big win over the Ivanhoe Roosters, scoring a 28-4 victory, but lost their earlier games to Young Cherrypickers (16-4) and Yanco Wamoon Hawks (16-0).
Their performance across three hard-fought matches was commendable.
All of the players showcased impressive football skills and unwavering dedication throughout the day.
After their two earlier losses, they bounced back in their final game against Ivanhoe with an outstanding performance.
Kai Greenwood opened the scoring for Cobar followed by the McMullen brothers, Tadgh and Oisin, who each added points to the board.
Chris Crotty’s impressive field break set up Kai Taylor for another try, while Thomas Plater and Ryan Urquhart added the finishing touches to secure a 28-4 victory.
Hosts Yanco Hawks went on to win their own competition, in the men’s division, beating the Griffith Black & Whites in the final
