There was another good turn out of participants for the Cobar Athletics & Triathlon Squad (CATS) club’s monthly triathlon on January 14.

Once again there were a number of new competitors taking part in the big field of 28 athletes.

Four of the newbies, competing in teams, grabbed first and second place line honours in the handicapped event.

Team Triton (Zalee Mollard and Andrew Reilly) were first to cross followed closely by Team Jig (Jessica Fugar and Seigrid Peters) and Isaac Theakston came in third.

Axel Fairfull was the quickest finisher in the Short Course category (300m swim/10km ride/2km run) finishing with a time of 36.05min.

He was followed closely by team Zooper Dooper (consisting of Henry Knight, Ethan McLeod and Pearl Blackburn) who finished  with a time of 36.32 and Caleb Theakston claimed third place with a time of 37.30.

Tom Summerhayes completed the Long Course (500m swim/20km ride/4km run) in the quickest time (1hr 1min 15sec) with Isaac Theakston just behind in 1.02.28.

Khan Fugar came home in 1.12.08 to finish third.

A number of athletes improved on their previous personal best (PB) times.

Isaac Theakston improved his long course PB time by more than six and a half minutes,  Ethan McLeod improved his short course bike leg time by 3min 16sec and Pearl Blackburn improved her run time by 42 seconds on the Short Course.

Caleb Theakston improved his overall short course time by 20 seconds, Harry Franks beat his previous Short Course run time by 1.42 while Zoë Egan picked up a 2.14 PB on her previous Short Course time after improving in both her swimming and bike legs.

The CATS’ next triathlon will be a scratch race event on Friday as part of the annual Australia Day celebrations.
