Not all superheroes wear capes, some of them wear scrubs, some wear hair nets and all who work in an Aged Care setting wear comfortable shoes for walking lots of kilometres per shift.
Our local superheroes at the Lilliane Brady Village (LBV) aged care home were recognised for their service on Friday as part of Aged Care Employee Day celebrations across Australia.
Now in its eighth year, Aged Care Employee Day recognises the more than 450,000 people working across Australia’s aged care sector who enrich the lives of older people, their families and communities every day.
Aged care, retirement living and seniors housing providers, together with residents, clients, families and loved ones all around Australia on Friday, showed their appreciation with morning and afternoon teas, celebrations and heartfelt messages of thanks to the dedicated people who care for older people.
From leaders, nurses and personal care workers to allied health professionals, volunteers, chefs, cooks, cleaners, gardeners, maintenance, laundry, administration staff and more, every role plays a vital part in the lives of older Australians and their families.
The LBV’s former director of nursing for almost 30 years, Sharon Huon, said aged care workers provide a whole gamut of care—not only essential clinical and physical care, but also emotional support, companionship and the everyday services that contribute to people’s wellbeing, dignity and quality of life.
“It’s important to provide personalised care for each individual and to give them what they like,” Sharon said.
She said the LBV staff are very dedicated and compassionate and often going above and beyond to ensure residents receive not only high-quality care, but kindness, dignity and community connection.
“I loved my time working in aged care, it was very rewarding,” Sharon said.
