People looking for housing advice had the opportunity to access information and support at a Housing Information Community Morning Tea held at the Cobar Shire Library on Monday.
The event was hosted by the Cobar CatholicCare Wilcannia-Forbes Specialist Homelessness Service (SHS) team and included an information session for people interested in renting in the private market or applying for social housing.
Local property managers from Western Plains Real Estate, John Bennett and Marlia Appleby, attended to explain what housing options were available, the application process involved and they also offered some advice and tips on how to navigate the local rental market.
CatholicCare Wilcannia-Forbes chief executive officer Anne-Marie Mioche said homelessness is an issue in Cobar, as it is across many regional NSW communities.
“CatholicCare Wilcannia-Forbes delivers Specialist Homelessness Services throughout the Cobar Local Government Area.
“This program supports people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, which may include those experiencing domestic and family violence,” Ms Mioche said.
CatholicCare also provides a Staying Home Leaving Violence program, which assists women who choose to remain in their own home, or a home of their choosing, after leaving a domestic and family violence situation.
Ms Mioche said the program aims to prevent women and their children from becoming homeless or having to leave their community, support networks and employment when escaping domestic and family violence.
