Cobar High School took out first place in this year’s Outback Science and Engineering Challenge held at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club on Thursday.

The Science and Engineering Challenge is an annual nationwide STEM outreach program presented by the University of Newcastle in partnership with communities, Rotary clubs, universities and sponsors.

It aims to inspire curiosity, creativity and innovation among school students and plays a key role in inspiring future generations to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics careers.

Challenge Days are conducted for Year 9 and 10 students and Discovery Days are held for Year 5 and 6 students in partnership with local organising committees around Australia.

Cobar High has competed for a number of years and first won the event in 2022.

The school also won the title the following two years and was runner-up last year.

This year a total of eight activities were offered and each activity is available, albeit in a slightly different form, for Discovery and Challenge Days.

Each year one or two of the activities are replaced with new or refreshed ones.

This year Cobar High School and five other schools put their STEM skills to the test in a range of activities that included bridge building, making a bionic hand, plane building, communicating using codes, building eco homes, and modelling fish traps.

Points are awarded based on their performance and Cobar High finished with the highest total at the end of the day with Cobar Public School coming in second.
