The Cobar Bowling & Golf Club will host the 2026 Australian PGA Senior Sand Greens Championship this weekend.
It is the third PGA tournament to take place in Cobar.
Cobar Bowling & Golf Club secretary/manager Jason Howell said the event is a boost for the local economy.
“I think it goes beyond the club, it brings something to the town, it puts Cobar on the map, not just Cobar Bowling & Golf Club but Cobar as a town,” Jason told The Cobar Weekly.
The tournament is a part of the PGA Legends Tour, which involves competitors playing 54 holes on sand greens.
“Players are coming from all over the place Australia-wide.
“At the moment, there’s 70 odd pros and 30 odd locals competing,” Jason said last week.
Amateur golfers will have the opportunity to win $20,000 in the hole in one event sponsored by Copper City Tyres while the professionals will be competing for $50,000 in prizemoney sponsored by Harmony CSA Mine and Aurelia Metals.
Jason praised local golfer Narelle Kriz for her hard work in bringing this event to Cobar.
“She has been instrumental with making this happen year on year, particularly getting entries in and creating posters with her daughter Samantha Smith.
“A lot of work goes in behind the scenes, not just the golf course preparation, but organising the catering, and making sure the club is stocked properly. Narelle also works closely with Golf NSW and the PGA itself to make sure the scoreboards are right.
“Narelle has done a lot of background work.
“We’re really looking forward to hosting it again this year,” Jason said.
