Finally, after a run of miserable weather and washed-out events, Cobar enjoyed perfect golfing conditions for the annual Cobar Men’s Golf Open on Sunday.
There was a field of 56 players who came from Cobar, Nyngan, Tottenham, Brewarrina, Narromine, Singleton, Gilgandra and Murray Downs.
Jay Egan has been the leading golfer in Cobar for some years now, and after five successive club championships, he was a man on a mission – to get his name on the CD Pretty Cup.
(His brother Matt Egan has won it twice.)
Jay had challenges from past champions Craig Dillon and Andrew Bartlett who have seven opens between them along with players from away who pushed him all the way.
After 27 holes, Egan emerged the winner by four shots (109) over Bruce Bennett from Brewarrina (113).
Not to be completely outdone, Dillon won the 27 hole Nett event (107.5) and Bartlett won the 18 hole Scratch competition.
In B Grade it came down to two Nyngan players, Mitchell Williams (121) and Reg Herbert (123) who dominated the event coming first and second in the scratch event.
Sean Bayliss from Cobar won the 27 hole Nett, just holding out “the Legend” Peter ‘China’ Brien.
The C Grade 27 hole Scratch winner was Matt Sullivan from Brewarrina who beat local Ron Craw by two shots.
Paul Kershaw took out the 27 Nett event over Jack Dunn.
