The Cobar Yabbies hosted the Nyngan Splashers for the annual Setts Cup Carnival with the Yabbies once again victorious in winning the trophy.
Named in honour of former Cobar club president and also a former Nyngan club member, Ian Settree, it’s the 8th time the Yabbies have claimed the prize since the inception of the inter-town carnival to honor Setts’ memory in 2015.
Ben Plush led the charge for the Cobar Yabbies this year picking up a quick six points for his wins of both the 30 metres and 50 metres handicapped freestyle events.
Plush recorded identical times in both when he finished within 0.09 seconds of his nominated times for each event.
The Yabbies also claimed second and third place points in the 30 metres event with Wayne Rice (on 0.28 seconds) and Chris Powell (0.34) helping the Yabbies to a 6-0 lead after the first event.
In the 50m swim, Jason Toomey (0.32) grabbed second place and Nyngan claimed their first points of the meeting when Nigel Tyack finished third with 0.36 seconds off his nominated time.
The Splashers started making a comeback and they picked up more valuable points when Lyn Faulks won the 100m swim with a time of 0.53 seconds off her nominated time.
Cobar swimmers filled second and third places, with Jarred Davey on 0.69 and Scott Toomey was not far behind on 0.78.
Nyngan grabbed the last points on offer when they won the relay with a spot on time while the Cobar team were well behind with 12.22 seconds off their nominated time.
While the Splashers may have won the final battle of the day, the Yabbies had won the bragging rights, finishing with 14 points to 10 to take the Setts Cup from Nyngan’s reach once again.
