The 2015 Festival of the Miner’s Ghost preparation is underway with the first meeting held at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club last Thursday.
Cobar Shire Council’s tourism officer John Martin said the meeting was well attended with 18 people from a number of different local clubs and organisations lending their support to the event.
Mr Martin said they all had great ideas for this year’s event
“It’s a promising sign that it’s going to be a great event.
“The Cobar Blues are organising a netball carnival, hoping to attract teams from surrounding towns.
“Peak Gold Mines are organising two events, holding an athletics event for children at Ward Oval and they will be conducting surface tours at the Peak Gold Mine.
“Cobar’s Arts Council will hold its annual art exhibition as well,” he said.
Mr Martin said that the Youthie is planning to host a number of events in the skate park and at Drummond Park over the festival weekend.
“Melissa Gunn (from council) is hoping to resurrect the hospital bed races which were cancelled last year because of the heat.
“Museum curator Kay Stingemore and members of the RSL Sub Branch are looking at the possibilities of running tours of the Cobar cemetery with a focus on local people who served in WWI.
“The market committee are already preparing for a bigger market day than last year and the Cobar Dust Bowl Fuel Burners Club will run their Show & Shine event in the car park near Drummond Park,” he said.
Mr Martin said Glencore CSA Mine have agreed to sponsor the giant fireworks display over the open-cut once again.
“There will be lots of music in Drummond Park all day Saturday and there are few other activities such as a “Monster Ball” being looked at and added to the list of events in the next few weeks.
“If anyone has ideas please come along to the next meeting which will be held in late July,” Mr Martin said.
