Local residents provide input

There was a small turn out of interested local residents for last Wednesday night’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan public meeting keen to provide information to help Cobar Shire Council to develop an action plan. Council’s special projects officer, Angela Shepherd, said the meeting was an opportunity for the community to get involved in serious issues. “Rather than council just making the decisions, we need the community’s help,” she said. A number of issues were raised including: various streets and footpaths around town don’t permit adequate wheelchair or walking frame access; Cobar doesn’t have a taxi that is equipped to take a mobility scooter/motorised wheelchair; residents have experienced communication problems with various state and federal government service providers when seeking assistance; Cobar’s disabled parking spots are not policed; and there is a lack of specialised gym equipment for people in wheelchairs.
