The Australasian Mining History Association is holding its 22nd annual conference in Cobar this week.
The week has been planned meticulously by the University of Canberra’s Dr Ken McQueen who has organised many interesting presentations as well as excursions to some of the surrounding mines and local tourist attractions.
Cobar’s Barry Knight and Great Cobar Heritage Centre museum curator Kaye Stingemore addressed the conference yesterday, outlining plans for the proposed Cobar Miners memorial at the Miner’s Park.
Mr Knight spoke about the planning for the structure, placement and costs associated with building the memorial while Mrs Stingemore recounted many interesting stories of some of the unfortunate men who lost their lives working in the mines.
“There are so many more stories I could have told, it is all so very interesting,” Mrs Stinge-more said.
Members of the audience asked if there will be a website or book to accompany the memorial so that visitors can read about all of the miners who will be listed on the memorial.
Mrs Stingemore said this was definitely an option they were looking into.
The conference continues until Friday where some of the attendees will be treated to a day trip to Nymagee.
