Howell sets record but Finn was the biggest improver

The CATS January triathlon was held at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool on Sunday. The handicapped winners were Zach Finn (1st), Tommy Bryan (3rd) and Michael Howell (2nd). All of the individual competitors in Sunday’s field improved on their previous times.

The whole field of competitors in Sunday’s Cobar Athletics & Triathlon Squad’s (CATS) triathlon event did better than they expected.

All of the individual competitors finished  ahead of their average/nominated times with all setting personal best (PB) times in one or more legs of the event.

PB’s in all three legs helped Michael Howell to also set a new Long Course Club record.

Howell completed the 500m swim, 20km ride and 4km run in 1hr 4min 25sec which was nine seconds better than Anthony Wrigley’s previous Long Course record.

Intensive training over the past few months helped Zach Finn to better his Short Course time by almost 10 minutes.

Finn finished his 300m swim/ 10km ride/ 2km run in a quick time of 43mins 34 seconds which was almost 10 minutes better than his previous best PB.

Finn finished as the Handicap winner ahead of Howell who had improved his PB by 2min 25sec.

Tommy Bryan was third with a Short Course time of 48.38, which was a 32 seconds improvement on his previous best time.

Athletes will be back in the pool, on their bikes and pounding the road again this Sunday competing in the annual Australia Day Triathlon, which is a Scratch event.

With five sponsors for the event, there are big prizes on offer for the winners.
