Under 16’s league match fittingly ends in 34-all draw

Great sportsmanship was shown by both the Cobar Roosters and Wellington Cowboys players in their Dubbo & District Junior Rugby League Under 16’s game at Wellington on Saturday. Fittingly, the match finished in a 34-all draw. ▪ Photo contributed

The Cobar Roosters Junior Rugby League teams played their Round 7 games of the Dubbo & District Junior Rugby League Competition at Wellington and Dubbo on Saturday.

The Under 16’s match against the Wellington Cowboys, played with just 11 players on each side, finished in an exciting
34-all draw.

With only 11 of Cobar’s very committed Under 16’s travelling to Wellington to play, (not enough to field a full team even with some Under 14’s playing up a grade), Wellington’s coach offered Cobar three players to make up numbers.

The teams agreed it would be a normal game with no forfeit, even with the loaned players.

The three Wellington boys went into the Roosters change room and were greeted with gratitude and respect (and a few high fives) in appreciation for their help.

They ran on the field with their Roosters jerseys on but the referee explained they were not eligible to play for Cobar and the match would have to be a forfeit.

The three traded back their jerseys and ended up playing for their own side but the game was modified to an 11-a-side match.

It was an awesome game of footy that finished in a draw, which couldn’t have been a better outcome and both clubs were very happy.

Oisin McMullen touched down three times for the Roosters and converted five of their six tries.

Their other try scorers were Jaxon Burke, Nicholas Hodges and Zaiden Saunders.

Zaiden was awarded the Roosters’ Players’ Player title while the Coaches award was earned by Aiden Swan.

Cobar had a 30-6 win over the Wellington Cowboys in their Under 10’s match with Roosters’ tries scored by Alfie Toomey (2), Sonny Stephens, Taj Goonrey,  Jack Mitchell and George Wainiqolo.

Sonny, Dusty McDonald and Charles Miller landed conversions.

Taj Goonrey was voted Players’ Player while Kasalia Fakahua earned the Coaches Award.

There was just two points the difference in the Under 14’s game with Cobar snatching the 20-18 win from the Wellington Cowboys.

Tries for Cobar were scored by Ethan McLeod (2), Jacob Chandler, Ryan Mugugia and Kai McCosker.

Ryan Mugugia earned the Players’ Player award with the Coaches Award going to Ethan McLeod.

In the Under 11’s game, Wellington got the win over Cobar, 26-20.

Crossing for tries for the Roosters were: Tommy George (2), Judd Josephson and Thomas Knight with Judd and Tommy landing a conversion each.

Their Players’ Player was Tommy George while Isabelle Gillette received the Coaches Award.

The Under 12’s game finished with a 22-16 win for Wellington with Tommy George (2) and Ella Oborn (1) scoring tries for Cobar.

George McDonald and Mason King successfully converted a try each.

Ella earned the Players’ Player title while Audrey Josephson was the recipient of the Coaches Award.

The St John’s Blue Under 13s were too strong for the Roosters winning the game 32-8.

Eli Martin and Lachlan Brookman were Cobar’s point scorers.

The Coaches Award went to Billy George and Eli was named Players’ Player.

The Under 9’s played Dubbo Macquarie.

Cooper Trudgett led the try scoring running in four tries for Cobar. Nixon Small and Indie Burke scored doubles with Billy Tiffen, Keelan Atuau, Julius Blackmore and Ashton Campbell also scoring a try each.

The Coaches Award went to Nixon while Keelan was named their Players’ Player.
