Speedway drivers back for another lap

A group of 44 former Cobar Auto Club Speedway drivers and their families gathered at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club on Saturday night to reminisce about their speedway driving days from the 1970s, 80s and 90s in Cobar.

Almost 100 revheads, petrolheads, motorheads, car lovers, speed freaks, gas guzzlers, hoons and greasemonkeys who raced speedway at the Cobar Auto Club from the 1970s, 80s and 90s, were reunited in Cobar over the weekend.

Drivers and their pit crews who raced modified production cars and fender-benders back in the Cobar Speedway “glory days” reunited at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club on Saturday night to reminisce.

Praise was given to reunion organisers, Trevor “Tricky” Palmer and Marie Lawrence, along with the club’s past presidents and committee members who worked hard to see the sport of motor racing flourish in Cobar for over three decades.

A slideshow of old photos and video footage, a racing simulator to test if drivers had lost any of their former skills and lots of stories were told over a few drinks.

Emcee, and a former driver, Troy Cook, who made the trip back to Cobar from Goulburn, led a Q&A session interviewing a number of former drivers including Henry Wilson, Paddy Ward, Tony Barklimore and Nathan Wilson to talk about “the good old days”.

Two former race cars were also on display including The Black Duck, which was restored and re-painted especially for the reunion.
