Cobar Rugby League First Graders booked themselves a semi final berth in this year’s Barwon Darling Cup competition on Saturday with a 62-24 win over Brewarrina at Tom Knight Oval on Saturday.

The Cobar side needed the win to make the semis and had an advantage going into the match over the Brewarrina visitors who initially could only field nine players.

However it was the visitors who surprised the Roosters and spectators by scoring a converted try soon after the kick off.

A side line break by Jedd Noonan then gave the Roosters good field position and Will Whitton was able to dive over to score Cobar’s first points. Robert Childs converted to level the score at 6-all.

Chris Deighton, and soon after Tim Hillam, found space on the edges and they both touched down for tries. Childs converted both to give Cobar an 18-6 lead.

Soon after Ben Simon made a break and found Hillam in support who raced in for his second try under the posts making Childs’ fourth conversion a mere formality.

Mid-way through the first half Brewarrina’s numbers were bolstered by a late arrival of another player however it wasn’t enough to stop Hillam crossing for his third try to take Cobar’s half time lead to 30-6.

It was a very entertaining second half with Cobar scoring six more tries while the Brewarrina team ran in three. Childs, Hillam (2), Brandon ‘Chucky’ Jones and Deighton (2) scored second half tries for Cobar and Childs finished the day with nine goals from 11 attempts. Best on field for the Roosters were Tom McBride, Hillam and Simon.

The Roosters’ third place finish will see them come up against Bourke this Saturday.
