There was a long list of 23 nominees for this year’s Australia Day sporting awards with Christine Brown collecting the Service to Sport award, Sarah Morley was the Sports Person of the Year and Ethan McLeod, the Young Sports Person.

Chris Brown has dedicated many years of her life to rugby league in Cobar and, even after stepping down as the secretary of senior league some years ago, she still continues to be actively involved and is now an active member of the junior league committee.

Her nomination states Chris spends many hours working at Tom Knight Memorial Oval on game days and also on weekdays in preparation for games. She contributes countless volunteer hours behind the scenes to ensure things run smoothly.

All-rounder Sarah Morley was this year’s Sports Person of the Year.

Over the past year, Sarah has recorded many sporting achievements on the field as a player and also as an official.

Sarah has played representative women’s rugby league for Castlereagh for both the Under 16s and Under 18s sides and collected the Under 16’s Coaches Award last season.

Sarah has also played representative netball as well as competing in the Senior Netball and Fast5 local competitions and the Netball Country Cup competition.

She played Juniors and Seniors touch and was the Leading Female Try Scorer in the Juniors competition and was the Best & Fairest Female in the senior comp. Sarah’s also represented the school in Opens Soccer.

Sarah completed her NRL referee course and put it to use at the schools Peachy Gala Day, acted as an umpire for the Netball NSW’s School Cup competition, and helped out with umpiring in the local touch competition.

Ethan McLeod collected the Kerrigundi Young Sports Person of the Year award.

Ethan’s efforts and achievements in the sport of netball over the past year have led to him becoming the “new face of Netball NSW”.

As a member of the Cobar Junior Netball club, Ethan attended the Silver City Netball competition in Newcastle and was invited to play in the Hunter representative team at the 2022 Netball State Championships.

In addition to netball, last year Ethan represented Cobar High School in the Buckley Shield rugby league team, played in the Cobar Roosters Under 14s team, played Junior Touch and assisted with line marking for junior soccer.
