Cobar Junior Soccer club opened its 2016 season on Saturday morning by paying respect to the Indigenous people throughout the country.

Club president Scott Griffiths said the day recognised the legendary John Moriarty, the first Indigenous football player to play for Australia, and the efforts he puts into Indigenous football.

“If you had watched the recent game between Australia and Jordan you would have seen John and a group of Indigenous kids,” Mr Griffths said.

“The kids walked the Aussies out on the field.

“Our day was opened by members forming a circle and a local boy and his didgeridoo.

“Bush tucker was also a winner – the club prepared Emu and Kangaroo sausages, Damper and yabbies,” Mr Griffiths said.

Kids played barefoot football (soccer) and the club had face painting and templates (supplied by the Local Aboriginal Lands Council) so the kids could paint throughout the day.
