Cobar Junior Soccer Club asserted themselves as a force to be reckoned with at the Nyngan Gala Soccer Day attended by the Cobar club on Saturday.

Cobar fielded two teams (of 11 players) in the Mids age division. Both Cobar United and Cobar Rovers finished the day undefeated and without contesting a goal.

Cobar’s forwards were well supported by the midfielders to keep the ball in the opposition’s half. On occasion, when the ball did make it within Cobar’s half, their backs assisted by the keeper, performed well to clear the ball.

Cobar United, coached by Trenton Grofos, started their day with a comprehensive 5-nil win over Tottenham. Goals were scored by Joseph Theakston (3), Henry Geppert and Edwin Palma (who scored off a penalty kick after a handball in the goalie box).

In their second game United took on Nyngan and came away with another convincing victory, 4-nil, with Henry (2), Joseph and Jack Preisig responsible for Cobar’s points.

United’s final game of the day against Warren also resulted in a 1-nil win for Cobar with Henry once again finding the back of the net to score for Cobar.

Cobar Rovers, coached by Greg McKervey, also celebrated three victories. Their first game against Nyngan was a nailbiter with Rovers just getting the better of the home side.

Tom Preisig netted a goal for Cobar to finish with a 1-nil win.

In their second match Cobar lined up against a very capable Warren side. Warren’s keeper was more than up to the challenge and managed to fend of many of Cobar’s attempts at the goal.

Not easily deterred, Jack Geppert’s persistence was rewarded when he managed to get the ball past the keeper to give Cobar a 1-nil victory.

In their final game Rovers got the better of Tottenham with Tom Preisig scoring twice to give Cobar a 2-nil win.

In the Seniors division, Cobar was short on players with a variety of Mids players making their debut on the Seniors team (in between their own games) to make up the numbers.

They finished the day with three draws and one win.

Game one against Nyngan resulted in a 0-0 draw.

Jack Geppert stepped up from Mids for game two to score for Cobar resulting in a 1-all draw against Nyngan’s second team.

Cobar got a well deserved win in game three against Tottenham. Henry Geppert found the back of the net to give Cobar a 1-nil victory.

The final Seniors game of the day against Warren also resulted in a 0-0 draw.

Sienna Jones and Malcolm Gilette both had stand out performances for Cobar.

Cobar’s Minis also celebrated a successful day in Nyngan claiming three wins from their three games played (against Nyngan, Tottenham and Warren).
