The biggest golf day of the year, the Inter Mine Cup Challenge, was played on Saturday and 57 teams, over 170 golfers, took part in the event.

Even though numbers were down on last year it was still a long day, but an exceptional one with golfers of all standards and styles enjoying one of Cobar’s great social sporting events. There were wonderful prizes up for grabs and all participants went home with a prize.

The day was well run by the committee and golfers all enjoyed the event.

The overall winning team score of 54¾ was by the Polyfab team of Mark Fraser, Garry Wilkin and Karl Saunders.

The best score by a team representing one of the major mines was the Peak team comprising of Greg Clark, Tristan Rex and Jacob Ryan with a score of 58½.

Peak won the overall Mine Team event with a score of 117.3, followed by CSA on 118.33 and Endeavor came in with 135.

Nearest the pins prizes were handed out to both men and women golfers and went to: 3rd hole—Jeff Hunter and Letisha Tiffen; 7th hole—Stewart Fraser and Narelle Kriz; 8th—Marc Cummins and Casey Peter; 11th—A Hodges and Tiffen; and 15th—J Armstrong and Kriz.

Longest drives prizes were won by Ben Tranter for the men and Kriz for the ladies. The Straightest drives on the day were recorded by Charlie Nelson for the men and Tiffen took out the ladies’ prize.

After the big day on Saturday there were only eight hardy souls who turned up on Sunday to play in the men’s Monthly Medal Stableford event.

Playing golf day after day doesn’t worry Max Phillips and, after touring Queensland and playing on some of the more prestigious courses in the sunshine state, such as Charleville, Isisford, Longreach, Cunnamulla and Blackall, coming home and playing on his home course was a piece of cake.

After taking out the Longest Drive prize in the Vets tournament at Trangie the week before, his confidence was up and he dominated Sunday’s game to win with 44 points, five shots clear of the rest of the field.

Alex Fraser came second on 39 points beating Marc Anderson on a countback.

In the Nearest the Pin competition, Peter Brien had the 15th and 8th hole prizes in the bag until Colin ‘Butch’ Eves, showing his customary fine touch on the par 3s, beat him on the 8th hole. Matt Egan won the 7th hole prize.

Tomorrow is the Tottenham Veteran’s Open. On Saturday a four-ball-worst ball competition will be played. The course will be closed on Sunday for the Ladies Open. With no men’s golf on Sunday, there will still be plenty to do to help out with the Ladies Open.—Out of bounds
