Cobar golfers competed at the Nyngan Open on Sunday with the A Grade Open Scratch winner a local “Bogan”, David Rose, who won with a score of 67, beating Cobar’s Jay Egan by two shots.

Egan continued his recent good form of playing well on unfamiliar courses.

His great form means he will be the biggest threat to Alec Fraser emulating his Cobar Open victory of last year.

John Carlaw won the A Grade Nearest the Pin competition and in B Grade, the only Cobar player to feature was Brian Russ who won the Nearest the Pin prize.

Several Cobar golfers played in the NSW Sand Green Championships in Narromine last week.

For Cobar, Bian Smith and Scott Mayne won the 18-hole Scratch on Saturday and Garry Wilkin and Peter Hutchinson (Narromine) won the same event on Sunday.

The winners over the two days were Robert Williams and Tony Mann of Narromine.

With a lot of players in Nyngan for their Open, only three players turned up to play at home on Sunday, which was not enough for a competition, and so the men played with the ladies.

A field of 14 players participated in the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club Day on Saturday and they included some new players: the Mitchell boys, Anthony and Joseph, who played their first games and Haymish McLeod who is trying to improve his game.

However, it was the experience of club captain, Alec Fraser, who won the day, beating brother Mark Fraser on a count-back, after both players scored 37 points.

Just to make it a family day out, “the old man”, Stewart Fraser, came third, two shots back on 35.

Ray Yench finished 4t with 35.

Brian Russ was the Nearest the Pin winner on the 3rd hole and Mark Fraser won the 8th.

It was also the final of the Bill Bartlett Matchplay competition.

Bian Smith, a six-time winner and, locally acclaimed the “Artful Dodger” of Cobar golf, had played his way into the final by beating Ian Prendergast on Monday.

His golden run however came to an end at the hands of Alec Fraser, who was three holes up with two to go.

For Smith, he claims it was a relief to lose; he says his Matchplay dominance over the years has become an albatross around his neck and now he can relax again.

Don’t count him out next year though!

The win is another feather in Alec’s cap and puts the pressure on him to defend his Cobar Open title later in the month…Full report in this week’s edition out now!
