Yabbies tie with Forbes for the title

The Cobar Yabbies team that contested the annual Four Ways Carnival at Gosford on Sunday included six “satellite” swimmers with former Cobar residents Andy Thomas, Gary Martin, Andrew Watt, Wayne Rice, Steve Howell and Tippy Dray joining the Yabbies. The Cobar Yabbies tied with Forbes for the 2025 Four Ways Swim trophy after both clubs finished on equal points.

Gosford hosted the Four Ways Swimming Carnival on the weekend with the Cobar and Forbes teams, along with a contingent from Nelson Bay, competing at the annual carnival.

Cobar Senior Men’s Swimming Club president John Carswell got the Yabbies off to a good start winning the 50 metre handicap Presidents Race after he finished within 0.17 seconds of his nominated time.

The Yabbies also claimed a win in the 100 metre Ian Settree Memorial Handicap event with Dave Mexted swimming spot on his nominated time to win.

Carswell finished in third spot with 0.21 seconds off his time.

The Cobar side also claimed second place in the 30 metre handicap event with “satellite swimmer” Steve Howell finishing within 0.10 seconds of his nominated time.

An all Cobar side contested the 10 x 50m handicap relay where they finished third with 4.20 seconds off nominated their time.

Forbes took second place with 3.21 seconds off their combined 10 man time while Nelson Bay took line honours after they finished just 1.26 seconds outside their nominated time.

With Cobar and Forbes both finishing on equal points for the day, a coin toss sorted out which team would be awarded the Jim Nixon Point Score Trophy.

Forbes got to take it home however both teams will be engraved as the joint winners on the perpetual trophy.
