The Cobar Athletics & Triathlon Squad (CATS) held their final triathlon event of the 2017/2018 season on Sunday morning at the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool.

There was only a small field of nine competitors with two athletes tackling the long course (500m swim, 20km cycle and 4km run) while the other seven completed the short course (300m swim, 10km cycle and 2km run).

The two long course competitors were first timers and included new competitor Paul Callaghan, who was the overall winner with a time of 1h 8min 9sec.

The other competitor, Chris Freeman, was a regular club competitor, who decided this month to move up from short course to the long course.

Freeman had set himself a goal of 80 minutes for his first attempt at the long course and he achieved that finishing with a time of 1.17.27.

He also finished as the overall runner-up for the day.

Tanya Gilbert was the short course handicapped winner and was third overall.

Gilbert finished her swim, ride and run in 42min 53sec to win the short course handicapped title from Cheryl Lewington, who was second with 45.40.

Back in third place was Raymond Jones with a good time of 39.57.

Last month’s winner, Zac Broughton, was looking like the man to beat again at the start of the morning, but that was until he ran into trouble on the bike leg. His bike pedal came off and forced him out of the race.

The club will hold their end of 2017/2018 triathlon season presentations and the first of their duathlon events next month.
