Local Ben Griffiths joined the Indigenous Youth Team at the Rugby 7’s National Championships on the Sunshine Coast on the weekend.
The team had mixed results finishing with wins over Tasmania 32-5 and South Australia 36-0 (with Ben scoring a try in this match).
Ben also scored in their 32-17 loss to Queensland 32-17.
Their match against NSW was a thriller which Ben’s side narrowly lost 15-7 after NSW scored on the final siren.
NSW went on to finish as the winners of the tournament.
Ben’s parents Claudine and Scott flew up to watch him play and Claudine reports the whole experience was “awesome”.
“The talent was amazing and the games were so fast and hard,” Claudine said.
Ben’s back home for a week before he heads to Sydney on Sunday where he goes in camp for a couple of days to train.
The team then jets off to Auckland, New Zealand, for the World All Schools Rugby 7’s tournament.
While Ben is looking forward to playing again he is however wary of how big his opposition will be with the New Zealand, Samoa and United States teams all part of his team’s playing pool.
