Some handy new social bowlers welcomed to Golfie greens

The Golfie hosted two fields of social bowlers
over the Easter long weekend with a
group of 21 on the greens on Friday and 15
for Sunday.
Five players in the Good Friday field were
first timer lawn bowlers and a few featured in
winning games.
Experienced bowlers Skipper John ‘Shark’
Daly, Karen Daly and team mate Shine
McIver were the overall outright winners for
the day finishing with a whopping score of
+26.
Their opponents, Mike Sargent, Joy Josephson
and Glenn ‘Kiwi’ Ratcliffe, tried valiantly
to steal the mat from the clutches of team
Shark, but Shark’s team’s superior bowling
prowess on the day simply could not be
matched.
Team Sargent’s determination however never
wavered!
Jack Kershaw took his younger brother Sam
Kershaw under his wing on Friday and they
finished as overall runners-up for the day.
They recorded the next best win with +17
against Helen Boddy and Allan Gardoll.
(Sam is reported to have thoroughly enjoyed
the game so much that’s he vowed that he will
now be taking up the sport.)
Double Lead Jimmy Goonrey, Tom Overend
and Matt Kershaw ended up with a +11 win in
their match against Goonrey’s other team mates
of Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey and Emily Claus.
In their game, Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond,
Sandra Zazoniuk and Peta Zazoniuk won by
+8 against rivals David Schofield, Paul Kershaw
and Robert McIver.
Peta (under expert tutoring from Mum Sandra)
managed to ‘chalk it up’ five times in
their game! (A ‘chalky’ is recorded when the
bowl touches the Jack. Any bowls that touch
the Jack are chalked and, even if they end up
in the ditch, the bowl is still regarded as ‘live’
or still in play).
Despite not having played bowls for some
time, Joy Josephson consistently demonstrated
she hadn’t lost her eye for perfect grass (how
wide to aim the bowl to be in line with the
Jack).
Unfortunately Joy’s correct weight (how
much power needed to reach the Jack) was off
and proved tricky in the slightly windy conditions
thus earning her this week’s ‘Georgette
Giraffe Award’.
In Sunday’s games, David Thomas played
Double Lead and his team of Mike Sargent
and Margaret Good went head-to-head with
his other side of Sandra Zazoniuk and Don
Roberts.
By the 9th end both teams were 9-all before
Team Sargent dug their heels in to finish as +9
winners for the day.
The day’s runners-up were the doubles team
of Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey and Karen Daly who
also had a very tight tussle against Helen Boddy
and Jack Kershaw.
There was only two points in it for most of
play until the last few ends when they too dug
their heels in to end the day with a +5 win.
Kyle Roberts, Paul Kershaw and John Claus
won their game against John ‘Shark’ Daly,
Daryl Jermyn and Peta Zazoniuk by +2.
Both Roberts’ and Shark’s display of
‘driving’ (bowling with force straight through
the tight head) was a clear indication of just
how determined both teams were to win.
Peta Zazoniuk was a first time recipient of
the Georgette The Giraffe Award, which she
won despite her uncanny ability to ‘chalk it
up’ multiple times!—The Second
