Seven teams representing four different  local sporting clubs competed in the Cobar Athletics & Triathlon Squad’s (CATS) Team Challenge on Sunday morning.

The annual February Team Challenge, sponsored by Copper City Tyre Service, offered a $250 prize for the team’s nominated club with the cash this year going to the Cobar Junior Soccer Club.

Teams competed over two different courses (depending upon their abilities) with three teams tackling the Short Course of a 300m swim, 10km ride and 2km run while the other four teams competed in the Try-a-Tri event which consisted of a 200m swim, 5km ride and 2km run.

Cobar Junior Soccer had hedged their bets and entered three teams. Their No 1 team of Tilly Doll, Cora McKervey and Isla McKervey, who completed the Try-a-Tri course in  35min 01sec, were the winners after they finished just one second off their nominated time.

Cobar Little A’s were represented by two teams, a boys team and a girls team, with the boys just finishing ahead of the girls after the girls’ rider, Kasalia Fakahua, encountered problems with her bike.

The Tennis Club team of Isaac Theakston and Pearl Blackburn, competing in the Short Course division, set a new team Short Course time of 10min 24sec.

The Cobar Roosters also entered a team which finished just three seconds in front of the Senior Soccer side.

In addition to the Challenge teams, there  were also eight other athletes competing as individuals in the Short Course along with one team.

Nathan McAndrew, competing for the first time this season, squeaked in with the handicap win after finishing with a good time of 42min 19sec.

In second place in the handicapped event was Amie Hill who finished the course in 41min 39sec with Bethany Smith just behind in third place on 41min 49sec.

Club veteran, Chris Powell recorded a good time of 42.05 with Laura Andrew finishing not far behind on 47.12. Parker Cryer was another close finisher with a time of 48.21.
