Service medals presented to three local firefighters

Former Fire & Rescue NSW Station 256 brigade captain Brad Lennon, Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell AFSM, Station 256 current captain Alex Lennon, former Cobar brigade captain Tony Walkinshaw, firefighter Stephen Gillette and Fire & Rescue NSW Assistant Commissioner Cheryl Steer AFSM at Saturday’s service medal presentations at the Cobar Fire Station.

Fire & Rescue NSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell presented a National Medal and two Long Service and Good Conduct Medals to local firefighters.

The National Medal was presented to former Cobar brigade captain Tony Walkinshaw and is part of the Australian Honours and Awards system which recognises the outstanding service and contributions of Australians.

“Recipients are entitled to that after 15 years of service in some sort of work that puts them at risk,” Commissioner Fewtrell explained.

“So it’s eligible for firefighters and police officers, people in SES, Ambulance and so forth.”

Fire & Rescue Long Service and Good Conduct Medals were presented to Cobar Station 256’s captain Alex Lennon and firefighter Stephen Gillette.

“That’s awarded after 10 years of long service,” Commissioner Fewtrell said.

He said it was wonderful that the recipients’ fellow brigade members and their families were present for Saturday’s medal presentations.

“Because you share that burden,” he said.

Commissioner Fewtrell praised the support of the firefighters’ partners and families and the special connection the Cobar brigade has among its members.
