The Cobar Roosterettes made a great start to their 2024 Castlereagh League Tag season campaign on Saturday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.

The Roosterettes put the wind up last season’s premiers, the Narromine Jets, when Cobar led 12-10 at half time.

Prior to the start of Saturday’s game, Roosterettes captain/coach Brianna Watson had warned her players that the Jets would be quick off the mark and they were opening the scoring early to take a 6-0 lead.

Sophie Clark crossed soon after for Cobar and Watson’s successful conversion locked the scores up at 6-all.

Not long after Watson raced in for Cobar’s next try, which she also converted, and that put Cobar in the driver’s seat with the score at
12-6.

Just before the break, Narromine found a gap out wide to score and narrow the margin to
12-10.

The Jets then re-grouped during the break.

Shian Chatfield turned the match around for them scoring a hat trick of second half tries which gave Narromine a 28-12 lead.

It looked like that would be the final score but the Roosterettes were not done yet and a late unconverted try by Bridgette Negfeldt, scored with 30 seconds to play, resulted in a
28-16 final margin.

Chatfield and Watson shared in the referee’s Best & Fairest match points.

The Cobar side this season is a mostly young team following the retirement last season of a couple of experienced players.

“We had a few newbies out there, and our newbies from last year really guided them today and that was really good,” Watson said.

Watson however still has the services of two experienced team members (and former team coaches) Bianka Jacobson and Kayla Hasson who both played strong games on Saturday.

“The talk was really good, the girls gelled together and talked to each other which is the main thing,” Watson said.

“It was definitely the start that we wanted.

“I said to the girls, if this is how the season starts, I’m very excited to see how it ends!” she said.
