The Great Cobar Heritage Centre is getting ready to undergo a fairly major facelift with restoration work expected to commence on the building’s balcony this week.
Cobar tourism officer John Martin said scaffolding has been erected to allow for much needed restoration work to be carried out on the balcony.
“We have to remember that it’s been there for over 100 years and some of the posts now have dry rot,” Mr Martin said.
“The work we are doing now is more about the longevity of the building.”
Mr Martin said while the building is not heritage listed, council is keen to ensure the restoration work will be in keeping with the building’s current façade.
“It will be replaced with similar materials and once it’s repaired you won’t really notice any difference except maybe that it’s been painted and will have a bit of a sparkle,” Mr Martin said.
“You won’t actually know that some major cosmetic work has actually been done.”
Mr Martin said he was pleased to see such a beautiful historic local building being maintained.
“It’s about 12 years since the verandah floor was replaced.”
Council is undertaking the work in conjunction with a local builder.
